FILING for SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY in ALABAMA

By:  Charles W. Forsythe, The Forsythe Firm

Yes, it is possible to get Social Security disability checks in Alabama.  Some key points to help you get approved include.....

  • Give Social Security full information about your medical treatment.
  • Do not be working at substantial levels when or after applying. Limit on wages or self-employment income in 2026 is $1,690 per month (gross).
  • Fill out the Work History Report completely and accurately. (I see fewer than 1 out of 10 of these reports filled out correctly, and that's a big problem).
  • Complete the Adult Function Report carefully and clearly explain  limitations in your daily functioning.
  • Expect the probability of being denied on the first try (the application).
  • Appeal any denial within the strict 60 days deadline.
  • The Appeals system is your FRIEND.
  • Consider an experienced lawyer who understands the in's-and-out's of Social Security disability law. (No win / No fee).

Here Are the Basic Requirements to File for SSDI benefits:

  • You have not yet reached your Full Retirement Age (67 for most)
  • You have worked and earned at least 20 work credits in the past 10 years.
  • You are not presently working due to a severe physical and/or mental impairment.
  • You expect to be unable to work for at least 12 straight months.
  • You have adequate (and recent) medical treatment to PROVE disability.

Important Note:  Almost 8 out of 10 new disability applications are denied for one reason or another.  The appeals process is your best friend.   But remember, there is a very strict (unforgivable) deadline of 60 days to file your appeal.  If you miss the deadline you can't appeal!
